There is one particular nerve wracking moment towards the end of book 1 which involves Countess Sofia and their escape plan for some Jews.
The 3 children were brave and cared greatly about each other. The true heroes are those who endanger their lives in hiding and helping Jews to get away.

This volume of WWII fiction takes a different angle than many I have read. Three siblings find themselves alone as first their their parents and then the adults that are hiding them disappear. The story focuses on their survival and then their escape.

An epic story about the best of people during the worst of times. Holger is trying to keep what is left of his family together. When the SS took his parents, he grew up overnight and is taking on the responsibility for his brother and sister. There are quite a few good people in this story and all are trying to do the right thing for others. This story is so well written and heart wrenching. This story will haunt you long after you are done.
